WARMANN: Rams Need To Give Back

(KMOX, St Louis) As we wind down the final weeks of the NFL season of what was thought to be a potentially breakthrough season for the Rams organization, it has become another in a long list of nightmare seasons. Everyone knew the first half of the schedule would be difficult, but the manner in which the Rams lose and continue to do so is what’s most disturbing. So are there changes on the horizon? One would think there would be barring a miracle run in December.
If Stan Kroenke decides to make a change at the Head Coaching position it would mean six different names have held the title for this organization since 2005. I would believe that is the most in the league. There is no question that Steve Spagnuolo is a good coach. He wouldn’t have led some of the best defenses in the league as a coordinator by not having a good grasp as a DC. Unfortunately for Coach Spags his tenure here in St. Louis has had a lot of similarities to other former head coaches of the Rams organization. From game day management situations to personnel moves to just winning and losing, the results have not been good. Does the blame fall directly on the head coach? Absolutely not, but he must bear the brunt of it.
There is also a lot of blame that has to be handed to the general manager who of course is Billy Devaney. I’ve gotten to know Billy a little bit during his time here and I really like him and have always enjoyed our conversations. But this is a bottom line business and I’m sure Billy would admit that things haven’t gone the way he had planned either. He hired Steve Spagnuolo to be his Head Coach and he was instrumental in making the free agent signings and drafting players. Did Devaney have the call on all of these bad personnel decisions? No, but he’s played a big role in these transactions and with few exceptions, the Rams continue to fail miserably. How can teams like Green Bay and San Diego continue to replenish their roster with solid players being picked in the later rounds of the draft and the Rams, who have picked much higher than those teams, still can’t seem to get it right?
Let’s hope that if Stan Kroenke decides to make some changes that he cleans the whole house and not part of it. The futility of this organization has gone on way too long and it’s time that this organization gives back to a very patient fan base.
